I landed on Earth half a century ago and have been unable to escape the planet ever since without my wife’s permission or my imagination.

Arriving as a wet, screaming bundle of joy in 1970’s London, I morphed into human adulthood as an ocean scientist, spending much of my existence in the Netherlands – a country nearly as famous as Atlantis for lying largely below sea level.

Personal

I live in the Netherlands with my wife and two daughters. I enjoy walking in nature with them, and exploring the depths of space with my telescope. I volunteer with the local animal ambulance where I rescue animals and bring them to rescue centres, vets and owners.

Science fiction fascinates me because it explores the “What if?” question, and I also enjoy reading humour. My family conspires to keep me busy; if there’s any time left, I write short stories – you’ll find a few on this site!

And you’d like more?! I’ve collated 40 of them into a book (“Outburst“) and my 60-minute writing challenges into another entitled “Fifty-Six Minutes” (i.e. 56 minutes’ perspiration; 4 minutes thrashing at the keyboard!). And I’m particularly proud of a book I wrote for my (international) church “How to Survive and Thrive in the Netherlands” (A guide for expats mystified by the Dutch).

Work experience:

Measuring, collecting and modelling ocean data and analysing it to understand the ocean better. Use this knowledge to advise other scientists and clients with offshore projects such as coastal engineering, offshore renewable energy, ship routing and ocean weather.

In 2024 I melted down with a burn-out that was brewing from at least 2019. Now God’s helping me get back on track; I’m having a big life reset!

Outlook

I want to be proud of the way I look after and love God’s creations – human beings, animals and the natural environment. And I’m learning I’m more social, creative and dedicated to ideals than I thought I was; it’s who I work with, as well as how and why I work that’s important to me.

With this insight I’m looking for companies / nice human beings (and / or other animals) with these noble goals and ideals too, and spend my time working with them towards these ideals with enthusiasm and creativity!
